Abstract

Purpose: The present research aims to study the correlations among organizational climate, academic satisfaction and organizational commitment as factors that influence happiness at work by applying a structural equation model to Spanish National Police cadets. Design/methodology/approach: A descriptive, quantitative, correlational, exploratory and cross-sectional empirical study was carried out. A measurement instrument was applied to a target population of 397 student-inspectors enrolled for the 2018–2020 academic year on the executive scale at the National Police School (EPN) in Spain. A sample of 190 surveys was obtained, of which 33 were open competition, 52 were competitive examinations and 105 were selective seniority. Findings: Structural equation modeling shows that academic satisfaction, organizational climate and practical organizational commitment are recommended variables for assessing happiness within organizations. On the other hand, there is a bit of a positive relationship between happiness and practical organizational commitment. The same is not true for the parameters of academic satisfaction and organizational climate. Originality/value: This study fills a gap in the literature on the analysis of governance models in public administration. This is particularly relevant in professions that require a high degree of engagement with citizens, such as police officers. According to the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first works to analyze corporate governance in police cadet schools in Spain under the happiness management approach. It contributes by offering a better understanding of the psychosocial variables that affect the existence of good governance. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Abstract

This paper addresses the relation or influence between the role of marital status in happiness perception of Spanish entrepreneurs. The variables used in this work are C1 which refers to self-perception of happiness, F11 which refers to marital status and C11 referring to self-religious. Hypotheses refer to a greater perception of happiness if entrepreneurs are married, and also if they are religious. The data analysis was based on the information provided by the European Social Survey (ESS). This is a representative sample of the population over 15 years of age in approximately 30 European countries. It is collected biannually and in Spain, this action is taken by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS). Since the sample has N= 185 members, and because of the Central Limit Theorem, the distributions can be considered to be behaving as usual, so the ANOVA test is also used. The main findings indicate that married people have a higher perception of happiness than widowers, separated people, divorced people and single. On the other hand, those who declare themselves religious feel happier than those who are not. Finally, it is mentioning the importance of this subject in a post-COVID era

Abstract

Currently, age is characterized by implementing business management models based on precarious work and a massive reduction in jobs. This article aims to analyze the degree of happiness perceived in Spanish entrepreneurs, as opposed to that perceived by the employees, and if that happiness is associated with certain sociodemographic variables (such as gender, level of studies, and income level). For this purpose, a brief literature review of the economy of happiness is carried out, considering studies regarding the happiness–entrepreneurship connection over the past few years. With data provided by the Sociological Research Center (C.I.S.) barometer survey, we work in two phases: (1) descriptive and inferential on possible associations between the variables, and (2) the calculation of probabilities through logistic regression. The main result shows that the entrepreneurs with employees are happiest. When the null hypothesis is rejected, the categories that seem to show the most happiness are those with higher education and those in the highest income ranges analyzed. Among the main limitations in this work is the scarcity of bibliographic production on the subject matter of this paper. This paper helps to cover part of this gap.

Abstract:

Social entrepreneurship is a complex form of organization, which includes technological organizations, where market-based methods are used to solve social problems. Currently, the issue continues to increase in popularity, but remains poorly understood and its motivations remain undertheorized. The researchers affirm that compassion can complement the individual’s own traditional motivations to influence social entrepreneurship. A model of three mechanisms is presented (integrative thinking, prosocial cost-benefit analysis and commitment to alleviate the suffering of others) that transform compassion into social entrepreneurship and identify the institutional conditions under which it is most likely to be carry on. In this article, we present an introduction on the definition of compassion, a model of how compassion encourages entrepreneurship and a model of the emerging organizational capacity for compassion, and we also discuss the contribution of both models.

Abstract

Today’s generation has undoubtedly witnessed spectacular changes all over the world including the emergence of diseases, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome. Now, we are faced with an unprecedented crisis, brought on by coronavirus disease 2019, a worldwide pandemic that has shaken our economic and social equilibrium, bringing about a new set of parameters in personal as well as in social behavioral patterns, and ceding way to new strategies of political conduct and economic planning. In this article, we hope to stress the idea of innovation as a necessary instrument for economic viability and quite possibly an important factor for reconstruction in the aftermath of the pandemic. We propose that society will have to adopt certain tools and conducts to recover from the consequences of the crisis, making use of innovation as a strategy for the recovery and development of the economy that has been weakened from lockdown and social distancing. With this goal in mind, we hope to prove that a crisis, such as a pandemic, is cause for change and innovation at all levels.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect on productivity of the application of the 3P (Production, Preparation, Process) Methodology on manufacturing and assembly production processes, in relation to ventilation and air extraction products. With this goal in mind we intend to review two cases of process improvements that were implemented in Mexico, wherein the components of the 3P Methodology will be analyzed to relate their importance with the results and its impact on different measurable factors related to productivity, such as standard product cost and percentage of defects. Data sources of a Transnational Company (Based in the United States) were used from 2017 to 2019. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the 3P methodology in improving production processes in Mexico, that were later implemented in the United States, impacting positively and transcendentally on a higher level of productivity.

Abstract

Considering that individuals and organizations for different activities increasingly use social networks (SN), this paper seeks to describe the level of usefulness that business sciences university students find in them, and the impact thereof on their Academic Performance self-perception (APS). The results show that in both Mexico and Spain, the target audience considers that SN are useful for academic topics, this being more noticeable in the first country; Likewise, APS is better in Mexican students. On the other hand, using linear regressions as a statistical technique, in both nations was found that the more usefulness obtained from the SN, the higher students’ APS, which turned out more noticeable in the Spanish case. In today’s world, where thanks to information and communication technologies (ICTs), there are high possibilities for interconnection between people and organizations, these findings are of interest to universities, government bodies and companies because they all offer products and/or services to a public who needs to feel that the former know more and learn about them better, for which SN become a current and versatile tool for dissemination.

Abstract

In the current study, we examined the relationship between perceived person happiness and factors that influence this perception, also, is inferred that life satisfaction is influence by happiness. Among 2494 Spaniards individuals of both sexes, we found that these individuals valued political situation, economic situation and socio-demographic characteristics to have a strong association in that order, with happiness and that this last construct is a fundamental factor to life satisfaction. The importance of perception is validated using a structural equation model that evaluates relationships and validity on the constructs in question. Collinearity statistics, average variance extracted, and an estimated partial least square regression model are evaluated to confirm independent meaning, correct construct measure and endogenous variable explanation by the predictive constructs. Results indicate that the level of happiness in Spaniards is most influenced by political perception. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed, and it is proposed to continue this study in a non-developed country.

Abstract:

The study of entrepreneurship is important for creating strategies that motivate creative activities in business development. In this paper, we study the happiness of Spanish entrepreneurs with relation to the level of academic study they hold, seeking to establish the relationship between these variables. Currently, there are a limited number of studies that address the relationship between these two variables. Given this previous reality and with the intention of reinventing scientific knowledge in the relationship of happiness and education, this work presents a thorough analysis of these variables in Spanish entrepreneurs. A correlational study was conducted using primary data from the barometer of the Center for Sociological Research (CSR). From this data, an ANOVA analysis was completed with results showing that the average rate of happiness is high. Observations also reveal no significance or direct relationship between the level of academic study held by the entrepreneur and their degree of happiness.

In this document we study the perception of happiness in Spanish industry 4.0 technology related entrepreneurs in relation to income acquisition, we seek to find the relationship that occurs between these variables. Currently, there are a limited number of studies that address the relationship between these two variables and in general expectations it is determine that the relationship is natural. Given this previous reality and with the intention of reinventing scientific knowledge in the relationship of happiness and income acquisition, this work presents an analysis of these variables in Spanish industry 4.0 technology related entrepreneurs. A study to discover relationships was carried out using primary data from the barometer of the Center for Sociological Research (CSR). From this data, a quantitative analysis was completed with results showing that the average rate of happiness is greater as incomes increases until a limit (1800€=3.35 increases to 3000€=10.75) and then is reduces again (4500€=6.13). Observations also revealed there’s a lack of progression of the monetary income and perception of happiness relationship and there’s a need to develop strategies that increase the subjective well-being guided in the principles of common good, happiness management, job satisfaction and social relations, among other things and there’s need to confirm this results in other sectors.

Abstract

Several studies in the literature indicate the link between socio-psychological factors at work with the degree of satisfaction or perceived happiness. However, there are still few analyzes that expressly address this relationship in the public sector workers, compared to those in the private sector. This paper aims to find out if the public sector employees are happier than the private sector, by associating happiness to some of these factors in Spain. Results show that employees in the public sector are indeed happier than those in private one. In terms of pay, safety and perceived stress levels, there are association relationships to employee happiness. This research provides very useful information for those firm managers who are responsible for human resources policies related to these factors: salary, security and stress.

Abstract

During the first two decades of the 21st century, the scientific research about cognitive happiness within the classrooms of higher education institutions have been intensified, some of them have been used to explore within the framework of the digital society whether the promotion of collaborative learning is a useful didactic strategy to stimulate the happiness level of future graduates. Coherently with this research focus, the present work aims to analyze the link between happiness of university students and their academic performance. For this intention, during the academic year 2018-2019, a sample was taken from students of technology, administration, accounting and international business from the universities of Cádiz (Spain) and the Autonomous of Baja California (Mexico). The results obtained by linear regressions are quite consistent with the scientific literature about the correlation between happiness and a better academic performance, both populations confirm this theory.

Abstract:

In recent years, the study of organizational and employee happiness has become a prevalent and increasingly important research topic in the field of management science. At present, however, there are few studies that aim to examine the happiness of employees working in Industry 4.0 environments. Against this background, and in order to extend scientific progress on the topic, this paper presents a microanalysis of the level of employee happiness of those actively employed in the Spanish industrial sector. A correlational study was carried out using primary data from the barometer of the Center for Sociological Research (CIS). From this data, an ANOVA analysis was completed with results showing that the average rate of happiness for employees is quite high. Observations also revealed that individual employee happiness is directly linked to personal income and not from factors surrounding homelife.

Abstract:

Studies on corporate happiness have emerged as a new approach to management and productivity. The theory around this leadership focus could change the way firms arrange their own business objectives and goals. In this paper, happiness, as a construct, is analyzed from an economical and entrepreneurial perspective. The goal is to determine if happiness influences productivity and work environments in technology-based firms (TBF) in Andalucía, Spain. A survey, completed by 41 employees, was elaborated on and applied to a group of employees in TBF, based in Sevilla. The results confirm that a happier environment is present in TBF than in non-technological firms. This is due to the strategies applied in TBF to improve happiness and wellness perception in their employees and the influence in productivity and, therefore, in organizational competitiveness.

Abstract:

In modern times, Knowledge Management (KM) is seen to be a key instrument in developing organizational competitiveness, especially in the context of dynamic organizations, such as knowledge-based firms. In this paper, we assume that firms are capable of developing dynamic functionality through their own initiative; this means that they are able to change and adapt, becoming agile to their surrounding environment. We propose that an approach from complexity theory may explain the phenomena that arises in an organization as it faces turbulent environments for competence. We introduce the importance of complexity approaches to knowledge management. The key questions addressed in this paper are: (1) How is KM managed through complexity theory, ensuring competitiveness is increased? and (2) How does the approach to complexity theory increase the understanding of competitiveness? This research analyses KM tools to implement management systems, based on knowledge and complexity theory. Although competitiveness is perceived as vital for organizations, the approximation of knowledge and complex theory are not yet fully developed and integrated into organizational processes to increase it.

Abstract:

Global manufacturing continues to grow, creating the need for enhanced innovation during New Product Development (NPD); this in-turn requires increased utilization of employee-generated knowledge. Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs), such as Yammer.com, is one method identified which can allow organisations to connect employees across departments and physical boundaries. This paper summarises the results of a dual-moderated focus group conducted with 15 employees of a UK-based sports manufacturer, aimed at identifying the impact of Yammer on employee knowledge generation and sharing during NPD projects. Results indicate that employees see benefit in its use and would welcome greater embeddedness of ESNs in the NPD process. However, barriers are identified which may inhibit its successful deployment, including issues relating to security and intellectual property rights. Identified benefits of using Yammer include: an improved ability to find people with specific domain knowledge; increased awareness of communities of practice; and the matching of problems with solutions.

Abstract

Competitiveness is a subject of study that affects different aspects of the individual and of the organizations. The demand that the modern environment towards the acquisition of skills, abilities and capacities impels diverse studies on the satisfaction that is obtained when trying to fulfill all the requirements in the process of development. In this research, we try to find a relation between competitiveness and the variables of happiness, welfare and education to validate the existence or significant influence among them. For these effects a correlation analysis and quantitative structural equations were used in a case study with a sample of 106 university graduates. The main findings indicate that happiness is a perception that can be presented as independent of competitiveness. In contrast, welfare and education have a more significant relationship among respondents.

Abstract

This article analyses the Knowledge Management (KM) and Project Management (PM) practices of manufacturing firms based in Baja California to determine their level of importance in generating competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector in Baja California. Key questions researched in this paper are: 1) How is KM managed through information technologies and organisational systems, ensuring empirical and industrial success? and 2) How do PM strategies increase competitiveness in the Baja California manufacturing sector? The research analyses currently-implemented management systems used for improved KM and PM, based on knowledge and new advantage orientation. One of the limitations found in this research is that several firms do not adopt standardised policies relating to knowledge procurement and development. Although competitiveness is perceived as vital for organisations, the combination of KM and PM are not yet fully developed and integrated into organisational processes to increase competitiveness. It is found that KM and PM have influence and correlations with competitiveness.

Abstract

Higher education has become a cornerstone in the arise of knowledge society conceptualization. This concept covers a new type of social configuration that puts knowledge as the main value in human interaction for future social and economic development and also as one of the main actions to improve in order to gain a better quality of life. In this paper we discuss the importance of this structure and its characteristics, then we focus in the need to generate a higher education curriculum that fits this emphasis in social development of a new knowledge-based society. Finally, we use complex systems simulation to analyze six agents including: 1) Students; 2) Teaching – Teachers; 3) Training plan – Teachers; 4) Scientific research, IT development, innovation and professional performance; 5) Management – Managers; and 6) Environment and relevance or External Agents and five variables for this study: 1) Teaching; 2) Extracurricular activities; 3) Research and development; 4) Management; and 5) Educational culture. The final goal is to propose a curriculum that includes a projection to create knowledge-based society from higher education as a main factor to achieve this objective.

Abstract:

Technology with situational awareness needs a lot of information of the environment to execute the correct task at the correct moment. Location of the user is typical information to achieve the goal. This work proposes a mobile application that enables the indoor location of smartphones using the potential infrastructure given by Wireless Local Area Networks. This infrastructure goes beyond GPS (Global Position System) where signal is weak or is not available for indoors. This application uses an alternative and unconventional method to indoor location using Wi-Fi RSSI fingerprinting as well as an estimation based on Type-2 fuzzy inference systems provided by the developed framework JT2FIS. Wi-Fi Fingerprinting creates a radio map of a given area based on the RSSI data from several access points (APs) and generates a set of RSSI data for a given zone location. Consequently Data Mining is required for clustering the obtained set of data and generating the structure of a Type-2 Mamdani (More)

Abstract:

The use of computational intelligence in a Multi-Agent System (MAS) can aid the process of modelling complex social phenomena. Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS) have been broadly used in control systems on engineering applications, but this also in Social Simulation could be very useful due the possibility to represent non-linear systems. In Type-2 Fuzzy Logic, uncertainty was introduced on the model enriching the capability of description in complex decision-making systems. In this paper, we introduce an Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Inference System extension for Netlogo, which is a very used computational modelling tool. With this extension, we aim to implement complex decision making systems in MAS and Social Simulation using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic.
